COURSE DESCRIPTION

In this course students will build upon their experience in Film 118 in order to strengthen their style and technique in digital filmmaking. This course will provide further instruction in establishing best practices for pre-production (developing, planning), production (camera, audio recording), and post-production (editing, mixing, output), with an emphasis on developing creative works of art. The goal is to begin making work that is not only technically strong, but adventurous, surprising, and conceptually motivated. Each student will be expected to articulate their ideas and interests clearly and precisely, using their work as an opportunity to communicate their own personal vision.

Students will produce three short videos over the course of the semester. The first two projects are designed to provide not only comfort with tools and technology but also introduce students to possible conceits/aesthetics/strategies for future projects. The third and final project is an opportunity for students to take a project from conception to completion. Beyond the three individual projects, students will also enhance their critical thinking abilities by participating in classroom discussions and critiques. Through participation students will develop the important ability to accept feedback as well as provide constructive criticism to others in their community.
